2011 10 14 Guest Speaker: Malia Zimmerman

So far we have been discussing print publications, but any new media entrepreneur has to take a look at the potential of the web.

It opens doors for people without a great deal of capital to plunge into the major media markets.

Malia Zimmerman was a pioneer in web journalism in Hawaii, partly because she had to be.  Here’s her back story in an article by Fox News.

She is president and editor of Hawaii Reporter Inc., an independent, online news journal founded in February 2002 that reports on issues pertaining to business, government, politics and education in Hawaii and elsewhere.

She hosts a weekly television show, News Behind the News, which airs weekly on Mondays at 1:30 pm. and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.. on Channel 54, and provides a daily radio report on KHVH News Radio 830 AM.

Malia has worked as a consultant to or reporter for ABC 20/20, Fox News, MSNBC, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post and has been featured in numerous media outlets including ABC 20/20, Fox News, Drudge Report, the Wall Street Journal and Washington Times foreign bureau and a new venture, Watchdog.org.

She also was the executive producer for a new television investigative reporting series, Hawaii Investigates with Matt Levi, that aired on both KHNL and KGMB television in prime time in May and June of this year.

The WEBster’s Dictionary lists her as one of the nation’s top Web Proficients and Hawaii’s new media thought leader.

She has won numerous national journalism awards and local awards from the Society of Professional Journalists including the top prize for Investigative reporting and online news reporting in 2010.

Malia is well worth listening to.  She went onto the web prompted by journalistic ambitions, and has made herself a strong voice in Hawaii media.  Come prepared with how did you do it questions.
